The Caledonian Society, Awali, was founded
in 1936.
Messrs Cameron, Rollo Smith,
Somerville and Wyper first requested the use of the BAPCO
club, for a private function on the 30th November 1935.
It was from this gathering that the seeds of the Caledonian
Society in Bahrain was sown. The first official
function of the society was to hold a 'St Andrew's Night Dinner' on the 30th November 1936. By all accounts this
was a small affair, referred to as a "dinner" rather than a
"dance." However, the formal organisation was
thoroughly carried out. The programmes and invitations
were specially printed in Karachi. Great care was
taken that the ribbon used in the binding was the correct
azure blue. As is still the case today, important Island
dignitaries were invited to the Society's major function.
In 1936, this was Air Officer Commanding, Managing Director
of the Bahrain Petroleum Company, and senior naval officers
and Commanding Officers of visiting Sloops. Tartan
cloth for the table decorations, heather and haggis were all
painstakingly arranged. A St Andrew's Cross was specially ordered
from a ships' chandler in Glasgow, and in addition,
formal speakers were engaged - and of course, the proverbial piper was
there on the night.
Only fifty invitations were printed, but it
is this tradition and attention to detail, that makes a Caledonian celebration something very
special, even in today's modern hectic lifestyle.
